In partnership with KPFF, Mithun was hired by the Seattle Department of Transportation for landscape architecture and urban design of the Pike/Pine corridor couplet that links downtown Seattle with the Capitol Hill neighborhood. The team addressed natural systems, transit corridor and pedestrian safety along this significant transit corridor by using a multi-disciplined, layered approach. Two major components of the design were the coordination of bus and bike lanes and creating transit facilities that accommodate multiple functions and provide comfortable spaces along the corridor.
Building on previous studies, the design centers on the pedestrian experience by enhancing way-finding with new planting patterns, public seating and bike racks, while creating a sequence of zones—from historic district to retail and entertainment—beginning at Pike Place Market and culminating on Capitol Hill. The scope also included construction documents for improvements to an existing transit stop along Pine Street in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
