Mithun’s mentorship culture recognized in Architect Magazine

The theme of the January 2012 issue of Architect Magazine is the future of the architectural workplace. One article highlights Mithun’s investment in employees and respectful office environment:

“Creating a culture of respect—of listening and engaging and mentoring one another—is at the heart of Mithun’s office policy. Employees of all levels consistently repeat a powerful refrain: A good idea can come from anywhere. ‘We don’t have a top-down design hierarchy,’ [Mithun’s Brendan Connolly] says. ‘The staff recognizes that there is opportunity to insert thought and opinions without fear of repercussion. Anyone can pull up a chair.’”

Summit Slope Park Wins 2010-2011 Design Excellence Award

The Seattle Design Commission has selected Summit Slope Park as one of the five winners of the 2010-2011 Design Excellence Awards. The Commission, made up of ten appointed professionals from design-related fields, has chosen the park because of its elegant design concept, contextual integration and social inclusion, stating:

“The park is a clear example of how simple design and detailing can become a backdrop to the neighborhood, enhance our experience of the city and create a well used and loved space for the community.”

Chatham University produced a video about the design of the new Eden Hall Campus. Mithun’s Sandra Mendler and Antonio Pares join Chatham President Esther Barazzone and Dean David Hassenzahl as they discuss the inspiration for the renovation.

AIA.ORG: Bert Gregory Shares Experience with R/UDAT Response to Birmingham Tornado

Mithun Chairman and CEO Bert Gregory, FAIA, discussed the AIA Regional and Urban Design Assistance Team’s (R/UDAT) recent work in Birmingham, Alabama in an article on the National AIA website. Last summer the team traveled to the Pratt City neighborhood to meet with city and community leaders in response to damage caused by a tornado in April 2011, Gregory says of the project:

“In all that we do, the Architect’s civic role as builders of communities is one of our highest callings.”

Organic Spa Magazine: Bright Spot in a Tough Market

All single-family villas at Miraval’s Tucson, Arizona resort have sold. The sale was discussed in an article by Organic Spa Magazine. Will Rose of Sotheby’s International Realty attributed the success of the Villas to the convenience and private sanctuary of the resort, coupled with the sustainable-minded design:

“The Villas at Miraval provide not only a private, luxurious, beautifully designed place to live, but also access to a whole new, healthier lifestyle.”

Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce: Nordic Heritage Museum

The conceptual design of the 65,000sf Nordic Heritage Museum in Ballard will act as a “neighborhood hub” and is designed to become a vibrant community gathering place. The Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce* recently discussed how the museum’s new design welcomes all members of the community to enjoy the space in their article, Nordic Heritage Museum will be cultural center:

“Though the second and third floor will be dedicated to the museum, half of the first floor, including classrooms and the coffee shop, will be open to the public without paying a fee. The building’s entrance will be located near the corner of Market and 26th Avenue Northeast, just off of a courtyard.”

Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce: Post-viaduct Challenge

Claire Enlow’s Design Perspectives article describes Seattle’s challenges to reclaim the city’s edge once the freeway viaduct is removed. The Seattle Central Waterfront design team is led by james corner field operations. As a member of the design team, Mithun analyzed the urban conditions along the eastern edge. Lee Copeland discussed opportunities for reclaiming the waterfront as a pedestrian environment:

“He [Copeland] said the eastern edge now basically functions as an alley, with drive-up parking and dumpsters galore. The practical implications of turning that around to make it a pleasant, strollable walkway will be important. It’s right up there with creating gateway intersections with deep upland links, like Main Street and Alaskan Way.”
