Thornton Place: Outstanding Urbanism
06.23.2011 Mithun, In The News

Thornton Place was recently highlighted in Kaid Benfield’s blog, in a post titled "Outstanding urbanism, transit, and state-of-the-art green infrastructure, beautifully mixed". Kaid Benfield, Director of Sustainable Communities and Smart Growth for the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) says:
…possibly the best example of transit-oriented urbanism, natural public space, and green stormwater infrastructure I have ever seen. This Seattle redevelopment is green in so many ways that it is hard to know where to start.
While Kaid’s article focuses on the Thornton Place Development, this is only one piece of Northgate revitalization that Mithun has been a part of in recent years. Mithun’s holistic approach to urban design, planning, and implementation is exemplified in the Northgate Urban Design Framework. Drafted for the Mayor’s Office of Policy and Management, the plan creates a design framework of pedestrian-scaled green infrastructure connections with a pattern book of ‘off-the-shelf’ public realm elements offered as a part of an up-zone process in exchange for increased height and development capacity. The recently opened Hubbard Homestead Park revitalized a 3.7 acre parking lot into much-needed green open space that functions as a neighborhood "front porch." The project visioning incorporated extensive community outreach strategies, including CulturalAudit™, project advisory team meetings, and various community workshops, to provide deep insight and a fluency of the rich diversity of this community.
