The R/Evolution of Urban Parks explores the need to shift our notions of what parks are and how they function in an urban context. The article is written by Gabriela Frank in coordination with Mithun’s Deb Guenther and Craig Skipton for the Spring Issue of Trim Tab:
Corresponding with the onset of the Industrial Revolution, Frederick Law Olmsted established the foundation of contemporary park design in the ability to meet multiple needs, such as with Boston’s Emerald Necklace or New York’s Central Park. However, in response to the decentralization of utilities, increased population in cities, and the rise of health issues such as childhood obesity and food deserts, today’s performance demand on urban parks reaches far beyond those early aspirations, begging the question: how can parks adapt to today’s complex urban environment, and how are they evolving to promote quality of life, reconnection to nature, and economic growth for future generations?
The answers rest in the way that parks are changing before our eyes today, in multi-layered responses to intricate challenges with inspired design solutions that address public health matters, fiscal limitations, and the need for high performance.
