Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce: Post-viaduct Challenge
12.15.2011 Mithun, In The News
Claire Enlow’s Design Perspectives article describes Seattle’s challenges to reclaim the city’s edge once the freeway viaduct is removed. The Seattle Central Waterfront design team is led by james corner field operations. As a member of the design team, Mithun analyzed the urban conditions along the eastern edge. Lee Copeland discussed opportunities for reclaiming the waterfront as a pedestrian environment:
“He [Copeland] said the eastern edge now basically functions as an alley, with drive-up parking and dumpsters galore. “Moeller’s use of recycled materials connects the artwork to the pump station’s function of moving enormous amounts water through a treatment system so it can be reused or returned to the environment.”
