12.13.2011 Mithun, In The News, Project Updates

Mithun collaborated with local artists to integrate public art into all aspects of the Brightwater Treatment Facility. Last week, the Seattle Daily Journal of Commerce addressed how recycled materials have contributed as a functional aspect of the design of the facility and pump station. Christian Moeller’s “Verdi” sculpture was crafted using more than 3,500 glass water bottles and was recently installed to encircle most of the 80-foot odor-control stack:
“Moeller’s use of recycled materials connects the artwork to the pump station’s function of moving enormous amounts water through a treatment system so it can be reused or returned to the environment.”

Bert Gregory is interviewed by local CBS affiliate
Early this month, Mithun’s Bert Gregory, Mark Shapiro, Erin Christensen and volunteers from the AIA Regional and Urban Design Assistance Team (RUDAT) returned to Pratt City, a suburb of Birmingham, Alabama, to share recommendations for the community’s new master plan. In August, the team joined city leaders and community members to assess the damage caused by a tornado that leveled much of the town on April 27. RUDAT worked with the community to incorporate their top priorities, including a park, pool and heritage trail, as well as other features to make the community safer, healthier and more attractive to residents and businesses. The plan also includes community safe houses where residents can take shelter in the event of future natural disasters. Birmingham Mayor William Bell praised the plan:
“A guide as we go back to restoring our community to not just the way it was, but better than it was before.”
