Seven Hills Park

Overview

Seven Hills Park is a .40-acre site in the heart of a heavily populated and diverse neighborhood in Seattle. The design is a new "hybrid park" concept blending urban agriculture with flexible, open space that meets the demands of city living. The project transforms a parking lot into a public space that builds community through collective gardening. As a strategy to expand its modest size, it connects directly to the surrounding sidewalks, alley and historic landmark church.

Like a fresh canvas, the park offers a multi-purpose lawn that is open on the east and west to pedestrians traveling to and from the nearby Madison Market Cooperative and existing townhouses and apartment buildings. On the north, it is anchored by the community garden, picnic promenade and historic church, and on the south by a promenade shaded by an allée of trees. A variety of seating in the promenades face the street to engage the public, while barbeque grills, picnic tables, and a trellis face the park and activate the lawn. A grouping of boulders highlights Capitol Hill’s role as one of Seattle’s seven hills.
