Federal Way Library Renovation & Addition
Overview
Building upon the library’s rich natural setting, Mithun’s design team drew upon principles of transparency, daylighting, and connection in order to visually open the building to the outdoors while enhancing the functionality of the spaces inside. With a guiding concept of the library’s addition as a “Lantern in the Forest,” designers added a series of new skylights, daylight harvesting pavilions, and movable glass panels so that visitors can better see one another, work more efficiently and view the site’s wealth of trees, rain gardens and native plants.
Natural materials—including wood reclaimed from trees on site—create a warm palette within that is not only beautiful but reduces noise and contributes to a healthier indoor environment. High performance glazing and a radiant floor heating system provide a balance between comfort and energy savings, while an expanded system of seating, study areas and collections alleviates congestion and improves functional efficiency for patrons and staff alike.
