Pier 56

Mithun's waterfront home: Empty warehouse pier transformed into creative, open workspace

Project Galleries

Pier 56

Overview

Mithun’s office is a recycled industrial pier. Naturally lighted and ventilated and filled with views of Seattle’s port life, it embodies the firm’s sustainable values. An open layout promotes interaction, while selected materials achieve maximum resource efficiency. These choices are evident with natural fiber flooring, 96 percent recycled carpet, low VOC paints, low toxic adhesives, reclaimed lumber, engineered wood products and wheat board furniture. The blasts of ferry horns and cries of seagulls that enter the space through open windows keep everyone connected to the world outside.

Szenasy, Metropolis, September 19, 2007 – Inside this cavernous space, with its operable clerestories and windows, and large glass doors opening onto the dock, I feel water breezes and hear seagull cries and the occasional blast of a ship’s horn. Susan visits three sustainable offices in Seattle and comes away inspired, if not more comfortable.
