REI Portland Flagship Store
overview
The first retail store in the US to receive LEED® Gold certification, REI’s Portland flagship store demonstrates the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship. The 37,500 square foot space occupies the first two floors of Edge Lofts, a ten-story mixed-use building in the Pearl District. Materials manufactured locally and materials with high recycled content are used throughout the space. Display fixtures are constructed of non-formaldehyde composite wood. High windows allow natural daylight to penetrate most of the space and photo cells shut down electrical lighting when ambient light is sufficient, assisting in a 26 percent reduction in lighting power. Similarly, wastewater is reduced by 32 percent through high efficiency fixtures in the building’s restrooms. When necessary, only non-VOC paint and low-VOC carpets are used. 96 percent of construction waste was diverted from landfills and recycled as the store was built.
