UW Master Plan
Overview
The University of Washington is the oldest state institution of higher education on the Pacific Coast and renowned for its physical beauty, with each sector of campus comprised of distinctive environments. The original core holds most of the historic buildings. The west and southwest are defined by the existing street grid and have the most development potential. The south campus has large scale medical center buildings contrasting with shoreline open space. The east campus has athletic facilities with shoreline and sensitive wetlands and grassland. The campus master plan focused on conserving and enhancing the physical attributes of the campus while identifying sites for new development. The plan describes recommendations for open space, circulation, transportation, and development, including historic preservation policies and a guide for sustainability. A potential for additional development of over eight million gsf was identified.
