West Capitol Campus Historic Landscape
Preservation Master Plan
Overview
This landscape plan for Washington State’s West Capitol Campus respects the design principles, characteristic features and concepts of the original Olmsted Brothers plan, while acknowledging the dynamic and increasingly urban context of the capitol grounds. Although the existing campus is immaculately maintained, much of the Olmsted Brothers’ design intent remains unrealized due to attrition, development and deferred preventive care. Combined with a host of historic documentation recently retrieved from the Library of Congress and the Frederick Law Olmsted National Historic Site, this project represents an extraordinary opportunity to activate the Olmsted Brothers’ original plan, communicate the value of cultural landscapes and highlight their ability to perform ecologically, all as a living example of the state’s environmental goals.
