Do visitors to your green building walk away with a greater understanding of their role within the environment and climate crisis? Sustainable architecture should go beyond performance and function as an environmental education tool. This session will share concrete strategies for communicating energy performance, natural resource management and ecological stewardship to building occupants, with case studies of recent projects. Learn how interpretive elements work in tandem with experiential design elements to actively engage occupants in learning experiences, allowing them to comprehend sustainability concepts embodied in buildings and landscapes.

Join Mithun partner Rich Franko for “Buildings as Environment and Climate Education Tools” to explore how didactic and experiential elements, visible ecological and building systems, and art integration come together to support environmental learning indoors and out. Featured projects include the AIA COTE Top Ten Award-winning Casa Adelante 2060 Folsom, Louisiana Children’s Museum, IslandWood and the Sustainability Treehouse.

Rich’s co-panelists include EDX Exhibits principal Michael Fiegenschuh, Centerbrook Architects senior architect and sustainability coordinator Misha Semënov-Leiva, and Lake|Flato Architects project director John Taylor Schaffhauser.
