Join Mithun partner Dan Solomon for a celebration of his new book, Housing and the City: Love Versus Hope, which documents a collision between two opposite concepts of urbanity: the “City of Hope,” which sought to replace traditional urban fabric with more rational housing patterns; and the “City of Love,” with a love of the city’s layered history and respect for its intricate social fabric. The book explores how each of these models informs ideas about housing, especially of a city’s working class, its poor and its immigrants.
Richard Walker of UC Berkeley and Ben Grant of SPUR will join for a discussion of the ongoing struggle between both emotions here in San Francisco and beyond.
