“In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, but in the expert’s there are few.” So begins the most beloved of all American Zen books by Shunryu Suzuki Roshi. Students of “Mindful Design: Beginner’s Mind in Practice” will learn how traditional Buddhist practice and mindfulness can inform a highly integrated, listening-driven design process. Inherent connections between mindfulness, community and sense of place will be explored.

This session at Greenbuild will be led by Dave Goldberg, Mithun President and Robert Thomas, San Francisco Zen Center Executive Director. Attendees will participate in interactive exercises, starting with simple practices focused on awareness of breath and body, and expanding to include all senses. Mindful conversations will also be examined: What is it to listen free from our expert ideas of what we are going to hear? What is it to speak from a place of freshness while being heard? How do these practices impact what we perceive, how we respond, what we are open to? Design process case studies at San Francisco Zen Center will be used to highlight key principles.
