We are pleased to announce that Wanapum Heritage Center received an Honor Award from AIA Washington Council as well as a Citation Award from AIA Northwest and Pacific Region at the combined 2017 awards reception on October 26 in Seattle.

The AIA Washington Council Civic Design Awards celebrate the best examples of what can be realized when architects and civic clients work together to achieve quality design. Mithun accepted the Honor Award together with representatives of Public Utility District No. 2 of Grant County, Washington and the Wanapum Heritage Museum.

“Everything we saw we loved,” remarked the 2017 Civic Design Awards jury. “This building absolutely belongs in its site. The materiality, and the colors and the textures of the building are so appropriate for that region… There’s a simplicity and an elegance to the detailing and the materials that get out of the way of the view to the landscape and the exhibits inside.”

The AIA Northwest and Pacific Region Design Awards program recognizes design excellence by firms located in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Idaho, Guam and Micronesia. The jury noted that winning projects were selected from 104 submissions this year, and complimented Wanapum Heritage Center for its beautiful detailing, scale and proportions, and thoughtful relationship to the land.

In addition to these architecture awards, the heritage center and museum has been recognized for excellence in landscape architecture and exhibit design. For perspective into the integrated design and visitor experience, read “A Living Culture Connected to the Land.”
