A new exhibit, Silfurá, featuring work by Etta Lilienthal, will be on display through February 4 at Threshold Gallery. These collections on paper reflect explorative studies as well as large-scale works using semi-precious earth mineral pigments, watercolor concentrate and ink. This project was supported, in part, by a grant from 4Culture.
Silfurá is an invented word, created by joining the Icelandic words for silver and river. Within a monumental landscape, the river is a connecting thread between two points, occupying horizontal space and vertical space, visible as water and earth, rain and light. The walker’s journey following this tangible or illusory line is one which moves through countless gates, conveys varied stories and embodies changing emotions. In short, it is a voyage into the unknown. The river is also the pathway to the source, taking shape in circular rather than linear form. Pigment water circles allow the element of chance—melting ice, water surface tension, and my own hand—to inform the final shape, size and pattern of each painting.
Threshold Gallery was established by Mithun in 2008 to connect people with art, artists and the built environment, as well as to inspire and drive our work as designers. The gallery is located within our Seattle offices at Pier 56, and is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
