An office building, a playground, two affordable housing initiatives—what do these four award-winning projects all have in common? Make your urban design intentional with the oftentimes unlikely amalgamation of social responsibility and sustainability. This session will dig into the design resolutions that captured the attention of AIA Honors and Awards juries of Architecture, Regional & Urban Design, Housing, and COTE Top Ten and made them stand up and take notice. Designers of the San Francisco projects 633 Folsom (Architecture), Sister Lillian Murphy Community (Housing), Willie ‘Woo Woo’ Wong Playground (Regional & Urban Design), and Casa Adelante 2060 Folsom (COTE Top Ten) will explain their approaches to social responsibility and sustainability in an urban setting.

Join Mithun partner Anne Torney at AIA Booth 1535 in the Exhibit Hall for “A+ Session: Resolving Sustainability with Social Responsibility” to explore the intersection of environmental consciousness and ethics in urban design, using four award-winning projects as case studies. Anne will share highlights of Mithun’s 2023 COTE award-winning Casa Adelante 2060 Folsom which provides 127 families with permanently affordable housing and takes advantage of its walkable and transit-rich site to bolster social equity and strive for a low-carbon future.

Additional presenters include Gensler design director Bob Perry, Paulett Taggart Architects founding principal Paulett Taggart, and Jensen Architects founding principal Mark Jensen.
