Louisiana Children’s Museum Wins ASLA Honor Award

Mithun is honored to announce that it has received an Honor Award from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) 2024 Professional Awards program for the design of Louisiana Children’s Museum: A Joyous Landscape in City Park.

“The Louisiana Children’s Museum design embodies the local ecosystems and dramatic changes throughout the site in fun ways and sets a modern precedent for children’s museums and inclusive educational play spaces,” noted the 2024 Professional Awards jury.

This project is recognized for design and sustainability excellence, social equity, resilience and diversity and inclusion. Louisiana Children’s Museum is a new model for children’s museums — a place where children and families in one of the nation’s most underserved regions would have a wealth of ways to explore the artistic, sensory and natural worlds. The site design integrates mature live oaks, the new museum building, and experiential outdoor spaces that demonstrate solutions to some of the challenging issues facing New Orleans and the world, including coastal shoreline loss, water management, food insecurity and climate adaptation.

“It is a great pleasure and honor to work with the Louisiana Children’s Museum to further their post-Katrina vision of joyous connections with nature,” said Mithun partner Deb Guenther. “The museum has influenced state funding for early childhood education and is making a positive change in people’s lives by supporting multi-generational conversations among families and friends.”

The jury lauded the project’s mission and sense of fun, calling it a “rich, experiential design that draws in visitors and students of all ages to play. The Louisiana Children’s Museum artfully embraces water while making fun connections for visitors to more fully understand how water plays an important part of the region’s culture.”
