Mithun and Lord Aeck Sargent (LAS) have been selected for the NC State Cates West Development in Raleigh, North Carolina!
This $870 million project will provide new student housing and dining facilities in multiple phases to address increased demand driven by enrollment growth and the freshman live-on-campus requirement. The project will construct about 3000 traditional and semi-suite style student beds and a new 1500-seat dining facility on Central Campus, with a focus on sustainability. Each phase will target LEED Silver or above. The project also includes a new regional utility plant, underground utility distribution and considers rerouting a campus street.
“Our collective team is grateful to be partnering with NC State on such a transformative project on this legacy campus. There is strong urgency for this renewal and expansion to ensure academic success for future generations of Wolfpack students and we are thrilled to continue our work with LAS to uncover innovative solutions,” shares Mithun partner Brendan Connolly. “Having spent my first professional years working in Raleigh and visiting this beautiful campus, this is also a homecoming project to which I’m personally excited to contribute.”
Three existing student housing buildings, a dining facility and a small service building at the end of their useful lives will be demolished as part of this multi-phase project. A new dining facility will increase the seat count for all you-care-to-eat dining, including a cafe + market, and student center activity-oriented space. The project includes a new regional utility plant, underground utility distribution and considers rerouting a campus street.
Mithun and LAS are currently collaborating on the Curran Street Residence Hall at Georgia Institute of Technology. This 862-bed student housing project incorporates common amenity and study spaces, and innovative education program elements to support student success. NC State Cates West Development is Mithun’s second ongoing project in North Carolina, following Industrial Commons Innovation Center in Morganton, NC.
Advanced planning at NC State will conclude by December 2025 and confirm scope for phased implementation over the coming decade. Phase 1 is scheduled for completion by January 2030, Phase 2 by January 2032 and Phase 3 by January 2034. Mithun is providing architecture and interior design services in collaboration with Lord Aeck Sargent.
