High-performance facades are integral to building energy performance, providing environmental control, daylight and viewsheds, and unlike mechanical systems they are constant fixtures. Yet many project teams underestimate their value and ‘value engineer’ them, producing performance below predicted targets and less resilient buildings. The 2024 FTI Report on Barriers and Strategies Related to the Use of High-Performance Facades cites costs and insufficient knowledge as primary factors, while Washington state has increased adoption through stringent energy codes including an envelope energy modeling back-stop.
Join Mithun senior associate Amanda Bryan for “Façade Design” to learn about the ongoing Mithun research initiative “Residential High-Rise Facades: Barriers and Opportunities in Moving Beyond Business-as-Usual Performance” that addresses perceived insufficient return on investment and design capacity. Amanda, Stantec senior building science engineer Ivan Lee and Glumac energy analyst Laurel Schandelmier will share case study lessons, evaluate code gaps including thermal bridging and provide recommendations for developers and AEC professionals.
Gensler senior associate Michelle Transou Neary will moderate the research session, which features four papers.
