Seattle Chinatown International District Preservation and Development Authority (SCIDpda) and Community Roots Housing recently broke ground on construction of Yesler Family Housing at the nexus between Yesler Terrace, Little Saigon and the Central District. The affordable housing project aims to foster a community of families near transit, jobs, healthcare, education and cultural amenities in this historically integrated area of Seattle.
When complete in 2022, the six-story mixed-use building will provide 156 units of family-sized housing (including 25 three-bedroom units and seven four-bedroom unit) for returning and current Yesler Terrace residents, a 8,400 sf early learning center that will be operated by Denise Louie Education Center, and 2,500 sf of retail space for community-based businesses. Rents will be affordable to households making 30% to 60% of area median income.
SCIDpda executive director Maiko Winkler-Chin said in a statement, “We are excited to break ground on a project that will foster a community of families near transit, jobs, healthcare, education, and cultural amenities in an area where many of the surrounding neighborhoods have been designated as high risk of displacement and high access to opportunity.”
Mithun is providing architectural, interior design and landscape architecture services. The consultant team includes Coughlin Porter Lundeen, civil and structural engineer; Rushing, MEP engineer; SparkLab, lighting designer; 4EA Building Science (formerly JRS Engineering), envelope consultant; and Studio Pacifica, accessibility consultant. Marpac Construction is the general contractor.
