The Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth (CDHY) project embodies a holistic vision of Deaf education, where architectural innovation harmonizes with cultural heritage to create spaces that inspire learning, foster inclusivity and empower future generations of Deaf leaders.

Join Mithun partner JoAnn Hindmarsh Wilcox and senior associate Chip Hammer for “Designing in Reciprocity – Aligning Process with Owner Goals to Maximize Impact” to learn how CDHY utilized progressive design-build to deliver a new K-12 Academic and Physical Education building that exceeded owner expectations for value and design. Attendees will hear insights such as the importance of a comprehensive validation phase that immersed the design-build team in Deaf-led workshops, why spending time to go slow early on was essential in building the trust and confidence of the community, when and where to focus on lessons learned, and how an extensive design betterment log allowed the implementation of enhancements into the project.

Co-presenters include Skanska project executive Alan W. Halleck and Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Youth (CDHY) / Washington School for the Deaf (WSD) executive director Shauna Bilyeu.
