As cities grow denser and public space becomes more limited, landscape architects are increasingly challenged to design innovative, meaningful play environments within compact and unconventional settings. Developed during the formation of the Downtown Resident Council, Seattle’s Westlake Park Children’s Play Area reflects how thoughtful design can meet emerging community needs and transform underutilized spaces into permanent, vibrant play destinations. Originally intended as a temporary activation, this project proved so popular it has remained in place since 2013.
Join Mithun partner Debra Guenther for “Maximizing Space for Urban and Compact Playgrounds,” an on-site presentation that will analyze how community-driven design can transform temporary installations into lasting public assets, using the Westlake Park playground as a case study. Attendees will learn how to apply key principles to ensure accessibility, safety and intergenerational engagement in compact and inclusive playgrounds.
Debra’s co-presenter is Berliner Play Equipment specification manager Theresa LaForest.
