As decarbonization becomes central to climate-resilient design, the Bush Middle School project demonstrates how mass timber, when paired with Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA), can transform K–12 education infrastructure. Material and system decisions were grounded in sustainability and resiliency. Low-carbon insulation, minimal finish materials and high-recycled-content products further reduced environmental impact. The project is projected to achieve ILFI Zero Carbon and Salmon Safe certifications, underscoring a commitment to holistic environmental stewardship.
Join Mithun’s Ryan Rideout for “Rethinking K–12 School Design Through Mass Timber, Biophilia and LCA in Practice” to learn how The Bush School Middle School design team used Whole Building LCA (WBLCA), Tally and Life-Cycle Cost Analysis (LCCA) to evaluate and justify the shift from steel and concrete systems to a post-and-beam mass timber structure. This presentation will share actionable LCA insights, mass timber strategies and communication tactics for advancing sustainable K–12 architecture — offering a scalable, data-driven model for future-ready educational environments.
