Green infrastructure design and investment with intentional community engagement is an opportunity to build a culture of climate adaptation.

Join Mithun landscape designer Seyyada Burney for the plenary session “Building a Culture of Climate Adaptation: Community Driven Green Infrastructure for Today and Tomorrow,” to learn about community first approaches in the Lower Willapa River community of South Bend, Washington and the South Park neighborhood of Seattle that approach green infrastructure in the context of climate adaptation. Panelists will discuss lessons learned pertaining to the communication of present and future risk, moving projects forward with the resources available, exemplary equity and inclusion practices with environmental justice communities, and a co-design collaboration with youth invited by the DRCC Youth Corps (Duwamish River Community Coalition) and DVSA (Duwamish Valley Sustainability Association). Proactive exchange with community members defined priorities for investments in green infrastructure that will result in direct community benefits, and built on a commitment to growing community advocacy and practicing climate adaptation together.

Seyyada’s co-presenters include Pacific Conservation District marine and estuarine resilience program manager Jackson Blalock, ESA senior conservation planner Rachel Gregg, Seattle Public Utilities capital portfolio manager Brian Mickelson and Duwamish River Community Coalition Youth Corps manager Crystal Perez.
