A new exhibition featuring the work of Anna Teiche is now on display at Threshold Gallery. Please join us for a reception on Thursday, March 5, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.
Anna Teiche is an artist based in Washington, with roots in California and Texas. “Feels Like Second Nature” includes drawings and paintings on paper and canvas that are inspired by nature and change.
The artist shares, “The works in this exhibition span my practice from the last 4 years, having grown from my experience as a caretaker for my husband as he underwent successful treatment for cancer. The spaces I paint are often in states of transition, regeneration, or destruction, mirroring the cycle of illness and treatment on the body: a forest as it burns down and begins to grow anew; a mountain dormant, and later exploding. Horizon lines are eclipsed, suggesting but never revealing what lies ahead. I draw these parallels from time spent in Washington, California and Texas, observing the land, weaving their varied forms into my work in increasingly abstracted ways. I often begin with gouache and pastel drawings, which become the basis for larger oil pieces, using the language of landscape as a source that transforms into mythical, emotional spaces.
“Drawn to material experimentation, I manipulate the texture of the paint as I apply it, often adding elements of the natural world directly to the surface — collected sand and stone powders providing gritty, heavy moments that meet translucent layers; providing both unexpected weight and levity, never fully resolving what our eyes see.”
