A Heightened Garden Experience
Kruckeberg Botanic Garden Boardwalk
Shoreline, WA
Expanding Access to a Local Secret
Home to an extensive collection of Pacific Northwest native plants and exotic species, Kruckeberg Botanic Garden is a cherished woodland oasis nestled in a residential neighborhood. A new canopy walk improves access and sensitively weaves through 25 feet of grade change across the hillside property, offering varied vantage points and new opportunities for engagement.
Welcoming and Immersive Experience
Visitors to the garden faced significant accessibility challenges with only steep and rugged trails connecting the upper and lower gardens. The new raised connection allows visitors of all abilities to explore the unique plant collection while preserving the garden’s natural character.
Preserving Mature Trees, Enhancing Views
Rather than removing trees that interfered with the path orientation, the design-build team utilized innovative diamond piers to protect tree roots and hydrology. A wire-mesh guardrail ensures both safety and unobstructed views, allowing vegetation to remain the focal point.
