Resilience as a Design Driver: Projects, Research and Practice

Location:

AIA South Carolina Resilience By Design Conference

Charleston, SC

Speaker:

Lynn McBride, Jason Steiner

Date & Time:

As climate risk increasingly shapes architectural constraints and opportunities, resilience must function as a primary design driver rather than an adjunct to sustainability.

Join Mithun partners Lynn McBride and Jason Steiner for the session “Resilience as a Design Driver: Projects, Research and Practice” to understand how Mithun integrates resilience into architectural, landscape and urban design practice through a combination of built work, applied research and policy-oriented exploration. Through case studies including the Louisiana Children’s Museum (AIA COTE Top Ten Award), Sea2City and research initiatives such as On Fire (wildfire resilience), the presentation demonstrates how stressor and shock assessment, future climate scenarios, and performance-based criteria are translated into concrete design strategies. Emphasis is placed on early-phase decisions — site planning, massing, envelope and systems design, landscape integration and passive survivability — that improve long-term performance, continuity of use and life safety under increasingly variable climate conditions. Attendees will gain insight into practical workflows for aligning client risk tolerance, regulatory context, and climate projections while maintaining design quality and adaptability within conventional project delivery.
