For decades, the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation (SAMFAC) has stewarded the living legacy of Sam Maloof, one of America’s most renowned studio craft furniture makers. Twenty-five years ago, the historic Sam Maloof home and compound was relocated to make way for the 210 freeway, becoming one of the most successful public-private partnerships to relocate a historic home in the Inland Empire.
Join Mithun’s Stacie Escario Yniguez, Tim House and Tonyel Stewart for the tour “Sam Maloof Home: 25 Years of Preservation Success, Challenges and Adjustments” to explore the historic home and garden and hear how a recent roofing rehabilitation project balanced Sam’s DIY approach to home design and building while ensuring the historic home is leak proof for years to come. Participants will also tour the new home which was built for Sam Maloof once the historic home was designated a museum. Mithun provided pro-bono services to help the Foundation consider how a new house can enhance the mission of SAMFC and serve as integrated part of the organization.
Additional presenters include UC Riverside professor of history Catherine Gudis; Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation executive director Drew Oberjuerge, associate director and collections manager Melanie Swezey-Cleaves, and director of education Leslie Matamoros; Page & Turnbull principal John Lesak; WJE senior associate Michelle Sandoval Marcinek and associate Tanja Chaijenkit; and historic preservation consultant Robert Chattel.
