New Exhibition of Paintings by Tara Kraft Opens in Threshold Gallery

Date Posted: 08.03.2026

A new exhibition featuring the work of Tara Kraft is now on display at Threshold Gallery. Please join us for a reception on Thursday, August 6, from 5:00 – 7:00 pm.

Tara Kraft is a painter based in Seattle, Washington. Her practice centers on rocks as portraits, exploring deep time and the human experience through layered, textured surfaces that echo geologic processes.

The artist shares, “Rocks stand as witnesses to deep time. Contemplating these ancient formations, I am connected to the natural world in both its immensity and its particulars, and reminded of humanity’s small place within a vast expanse. I think of these paintings as portraits. Each work begins with direct observation of a specific rock formation in its home landscape, informed by the geologic history that shaped it.

“This exhibition brings together rocks I have encountered in the Cascade Mountains and during residencies at Capulin Volcano National Monument and Isle Royale National Park. Cascade rocks that seem grey reveal intricate, colorful inner worlds. Capulin’s volcanic forms preserve a moment of swirling activity, now richly inhabited by lichen. Isle Royale’s stately rocks, more than a billion years old, bely their fiery past as one of Earth’s largest ancient lava flows. To walk through this exhibition is to move through more than a billion years of geological activity, and to consider our own brief presence within it.”
