Embodied and operational carbon analysis is increasingly critical to advancing low-carbon and circular design strategies. Yet many architects still face barriers to integrating these analyses into everyday design workflows because existing simulation tools often require specialized knowledge, complex interfaces, repetitive data entry and disconnected technical processes.

Join Mithun associate Ryan Rideout for the technical session “Embodied Carbon & the Built Environment” to learn about the firm’s ongoing AI research initiative “Conversational Carbon: Integrating MCP and LLMs for Embodied Impact Analysis.” This session presents an integrated approach that combines the Model Context Protocol (MCP), large language models (LLMs), and validated building-performance engines to create a conversational, intelligent interface for energy and carbon analysis. Particular attention will be given to the background processes required to achieve reliable data synchronization, including how the application layer connects the LLM with carbon databases, simulation engines and project information. Live demonstrations will illustrate how users can navigate sophisticated energy and carbon analyses conversationally while the underlying MCP architecture identifies and coordinates the necessary computational steps.
