Location:

APA Washington Annual Chapter Conference

Washington’s housing legislation wave has created new momentum for cities to update their zoning codes. But updating zoning alone does not necessarily mean development will follow.

Join Mithun associate principal Brad Barnett for “New Zoning, No Buildings: Calibrating Zoning and Design Standards to Support Development,” an interdisciplinary panel presentation incorporating design, public sector planning and real estate perspectives, to examine where zoning and design standards meet building reality and how to write codes that actually lead to development. The session will use real world examples to provide attendees with a framework for stress-testing draft standards against building type constraints before adoption, a set of common calibration pitfalls to avoid and a cross-disciplinary vocabulary for more effective collaboration with architects and development teams during the code writing process.

Brad’s co-presenters are City of Richmond senior planner Odra Cárdenas and ECOnorthwest partner and project director Tyler Bump.
