Washington’s HB 1181 fundamentally changed climate planning under the Growth Management Act by requiring local jurisdictions to integrate climate elements into comprehensive plans.
Join Mithun partner Erin Ishizaki and principal Christian Runge for “Nature Is Infrastructure: Implementing HB 1181 Through Biodiversity, Climate and Public Health Planning,” to explore how biodiversity, habitat systems, tree canopy and natural infrastructure can serve as practical implementation strategies for meeting these new requirements, while advancing decarbonization, resilience, equity and public health goals. Moving beyond traditional urban greening approaches, panelists will discuss biodiversity planning at both landscape and site scales, emerging ecological metrics and indices, and new interdisciplinary frameworks from ASLA, APA Sustainable Communities Division and Architecture 2030 that reposition ecological systems as essential civic infrastructure. Attendees will gain actionable policy tools and cross-sector strategies for integrating biodiversity and climate resilience into planning practice statewide.
Erin and Christian’s co-presenter is Architecture 2030 CEO Vincent Martinez.
