From start to finish, this cross-disciplinary R+D study aims to Build Better Schools by combining mass timber technology and proven research about biophilia. The design features warm, well-daylit wood interiors that maximize the physiological and psychological benefits of nature in low-carbon K-12 schools. The unique kit-of-parts is designed to improve interior learning environments, reduce carbon emissions and shorten construction schedules. Based on a structural grid and sectional framework that balances efficient timber fiber volumes with the need for agile spaces, the result is an easily adaptable, cost-competitive, systems approach for schools. How can we leverage mass timber construction to amplify learning and be cost competitive? The Mithun R+D project “Building Better Schools” analyzes the performance of wood-rich environments and presents an innovative CLT system that maximizes benefit to learners and schools. No two school districts have the same learning needs. To maximize adaptability, the mass timber framework explores ways in which the system can accommodate a range of classroom quantities, teaching pedagogies and learning area needs. Diverse plan studies demonstrate opportunities for shared learning, classroom sizing, access to the exterior and circulation through the classroom block. Taller buildings at the west side of the site protect the courtyards from wind exposure and create a more private residential experience. Treehouses in the woods, they subtly reflect the complex geometries of the forest and paths below—opening at areas of gathering and amenity like this spa area. This mixed use neighborhood concept creates a dynamic live/work community geared toward the Bay Area’s tech workforce. A mix of apartment configurations are interspersed with activity nodes like the ‘think tank’ flexible work and collaboration space, diverse retail and fitness/lifestyle amenities. Indoor and outdoor gathering and study spaces abound at Nuevo East to serve the graduate student population. A variety of scales and range of character provide residents with choice and comfort to align with that moment’s activity and preferences. In addition to flexible seating nooks like this one overlooking the adjacent Porton building, options include visible and social lounge areas in the bustling Exchange building, laundry porches perfect for multitasking, gracious roof terraces with adjacent meeting spaces, and dispersed quiet spaces for focused work. 📷: @brucedamonte
