How can we leverage mass timber construction to amplify learning and be cost competitive? The Mithun R+D project “Building Better Schools” analyzes the performance of wood-rich environments and presents an innovative CLT system that maximizes benefit to learners and schools. No two school districts have the same learning needs. To maximize adaptability, the mass timber framework explores ways in which the system can accommodate a range of classroom quantities, teaching pedagogies and learning area needs. Diverse plan studies demonstrate opportunities for shared learning, classroom sizing, access to the exterior and circulation through the classroom block. Taller buildings at the west side of the site protect the courtyards from wind exposure and create a more private residential experience. Treehouses in the woods, they subtly reflect the complex geometries of the forest and paths below—opening at areas of gathering and amenity like this spa area. Here and throughout the mixed-use community, the design offers uplifting habitats for relaxation, work and all the hybrid moments in between. Image by @plo.mp for Mithun

Great spaces are those places where celebrations are held, discoveries are made, friends run into each other and cultures mix. Public art installations, shops and a brew pub reinforce indoor-outdoor connectivity, drawing residents and pedestrians to explore, linger and activate the central courtyard.
