Mithun R+D is grounded in the firm mission — Design for Positive Change — seeking to advance design knowledge and its application. Through internal project research, external partnerships, and intellectual research pursuits, Mithun R+D transforms projects and design with meaningful inquiry and exploration.
Building on our legacy and history of research and development, in 2016, R+D efforts were formalized within the practice to further the mission of the firm. Mithun R+D is an overarching entity that supports and guides the integration of research and development into projects, design process and culture. An annual request for proposals is issued to all Mithunees, encouraging project teams and individuals to submit provocative proposals that merit investigation.

Resilience — Thrive in the Face of Climate Change
How can we “design for 2080,” anticipating, predicting and incorporating climate change into the design process and project outcomes? How can we also address equity through examining and addressing equitable processes, systemic injustices and racial disparities within our work and practice?
Health and Well-being — Enhance the Human Condition
How can we impact heath via design through measuring, simulating and analyzing built environments for mental, physical and social well-being? How can we positively affect health at all scales, from individual material impacts to public health determinants in urban design strategy?
Carbon — Achieve Carbon Negativity
How can we achieve holistic carbon negativity, addressing comprehensive carbon reduction strategies at the room, building, site, campus, district and city scale? How can we target reductions through life cycle analysis, materials research, project strategy, and mass timber and concrete innovation?
Artificial Intelligence — Empower Decision-making
How can Artificial Intelligence (AI) enable iterative design workflows through scripting, optimization and custom app development? What are the implications of an AI-enabled built environment, and how can we anticipate, investigate and embrace disruptive technologies’ long-term impact?
Construction Technology— Transform Building Delivery
How can we engage transformative changes in building delivery though exploration of fabrication technology and evolving delivery models? How can we anticipate emerging techniques for construction, with a long-term look at assembly and disassembly, reuse, and a kit-of-parts approach for flexibility?
