Enriching Community and Ecology

Georgia Tech Bud and Val Peterson Residence Hall

Atlanta, GA

Activating a Campus Gateway

This new residential community transforms an existing parking lot into a vibrant gateway experience for first-year students. An indoor-outdoor “front porch” fosters a welcoming sense of community, and reinforces connections to the greater campus fabric and adjacent Westside neighborhood.

Increasing Choice for Students

An optimized mix of programs and spatial efficiency supports the university’s academic mission, student experience and housing affordability. Ground floor amenity spaces — including a multipurpose room, 24-hour automated market, space for e-gaming (including broadcasting) and fitness room — converge around a large communal kitchen that anchors the entry, expanding food options and enhancing student cohesion.

High-Performance Design

Smart massing, building orientation and a high-performance envelope are leveraged to achieve an EUI of 23 kBTU/sf/year and Passive House design standards. Stormwater and ecological design concepts connect the project to Georgia Tech’s beloved EcoCommons, inspiring campus greenspace devoted to ecological function and health.
