A New View on Campus Dining

UC Santa Cruz Rachel Carson Dining Expansion

Santa Cruz, CA

Strengthening Sense of Place

This renovation and expansion enhances the west campus experience with high-traffic dining and landscape spaces featuring panoramic views of the Monterey Bay, flexible gathering areas and terraces. The building’s bold pitched form relates to adjacent historical residential college buildings. Surrounding thoroughfares inform building access points and connections to the rest of campus.

Improving Food Systems and Experience

The open display kitchen highlights a commitment to fresh food and personalized service. Enhancements streamline operational efficiencies, increase capacity and introduce new amenities such as a rotating demonstration bar and central bakery that supplies catering and broader dining services. Increased access to daylight and coastal meadow views support the health and wellness of both students and staff.

Linking Human Wellness and Ecosystem Health

In honor of sustainability pioneer Rachel Carson, the design prioritizes reuse and energy efficiency through strategies like rainwater recycling for all-gender restrooms and passive cooling in the Great Hall. Native meadow planting provides green stormwater treatment, while coast live oaks support habitat — increasing human and ecosystem wellness.
