Mithun Receives AIA Northwest + Pacific Region Firm Award

Date Posted: 10.27.2017

Mithun is honored to receive the 2017 Firm Award from the American Institute of Architects Northwest and Pacific Region (AIA NW+PR). The award is bestowed upon an architectural practice each year for excellence in design, contributions to the profession, record of community engagement and exceptional work environment.

The AIA NW+PR Firm Award jury selected Mithun in a unanimous decision, expressing that “Mithun is a value-driven practice that works consistently to advance sustainability and equity, integrated with high design.”

We are deeply humbled to receive this significant recognition from our peers. Mithun’s success is built upon the values and vision of multiple generations of our firm, which was founded in 1949 by Omer Mithun and has grown to encompass over 150 team members in Seattle and San Francisco. Our work in the Pacific Northwest and across the nation demonstrates that integrated design—including architecture, landscape architecture, interior design and planning—can be a driving force in creating a sustainable and humane future for all.

This accomplishment is a testament to our incredible project partners—clients, contractors, engineers, collaborating designers and community members. “We couldn’t do this work alone,” explains Mithun President David Goldberg. “Collaborating with visionary partners, we have helped create remarkable places that positively impact the communities we serve.”

Presenting the award at the October 26 awards ceremony, juror Michael Tingley AIA added, “We talked not just about the significance and the quality of the work, which is at a really high level, but also their commitment to their profession, the commitment to the way they share knowledge in their community, the way they support the practice of architecture, and the way they invest in their staff. We felt that they were successful leaders on all different levels of their practice.”

DESIGN DEEPLY ROOTED IN PLACE
Mithun’s design process honors the identity of place—culture, history and ecology—with a reverence for the characteristics that make each unique. Our broad portfolio of work is inspired and formed by the patterns of nature, the vision of an organization, the soul of the city.

TRAILBLAZING ECOLOGICAL DESIGN AT ALL SCALES
Mithun is a national leader in sustainable design with six AIA COTE Top Ten Awards for groundbreaking projects in diverse typologies. We are passionate about the positive impact that design can bring to our shared environment, and to human health and well-being.

PROFESSIONAL ADVOCACY AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
We give big, through time and contributions, to the communities where we live and work. Mithun has given more than two million dollars in donations and in-kind services to charitable organizations during the past 10 years alone. Our culture of civic engagement and service is evident at all levels of the organization.

EXPERIMENTATION AND INNOVATION
Mithun invests in research to solve clients’ increasingly complex challenges, tackle global issues and advance the profession. Design, technology and policy converge within our work in areas including neighborhood and district-scale sustainability, design for health, social resilience, material performance and construction methods.

CULTIVATING THE NEXT GENERATION
Actively cultivating our fifth generation of firm leaders, Mithun’s interdisciplinary teams are structured to welcome ideas, reward collaboration and invite constant professional challenge. Our workplace culture is grounded in collective curiosity and a shared sense of purpose: Design for Positive Change.
