Undergraduate and graduate students have a different set of wants and needs when it comes to on-campus living. Today’s graduate housing communities reflect this older population’s focus on affordable smaller units, private, high-tech study spaces and family-friendly amenities like community gardens and children’s play areas.

”We’re hearing more and more from our graduate students that they need a break,” says Mark Cunningham, assistant vice chancellor or housing, dining and hospitality services at University of California, San Diego (UCSD). “We went with these smaller, private units to provide them with that space to unwind. Then, when they do feel like being around people, we provide a lot of great spaces for community gathering and interaction.”

Mark Cunningham and Mithun’s Brendan Connolly describe the innovative design solutions being implemented at UCSD Mesa Nueva and Nuevo West in the Student Housing Business article, “Graduate-level Design.”
