Connecting Campus Communities

UC San Diego Mesa Nueva Graduate and Professional Student Housing

La Jolla, CA

Diversity and Choice

Multiple mixed-use buildings define and connect a series of outdoor rooms that respond to the natural site and foster community. Inside and out, Mesa Nueva’s amenities serve as mixing chambers, delivering flexibility, access and choice to the diverse resident population.

Innovative Density

The design increases housing density in a respectful way that connects to the larger landscape and community, and addresses a waiting list with thousands of graduate students seeking affordable on-campus housing. It also introduces an innovative, highly flexible micro-housing model that optimizes student comfort and campus development potential.

Building for the Future

The building structure enhances longevity and performance, while providing passive thermal mass and enhanced acoustic separation. The design features natural cooling, high-performing building envelope and energy systems, and on-site renewable energy. Thoughtful master planning enables seamless linkage to future phases of sustainable campus development.
