Mithun at the 2020 Building Museums Conference

Date Posted: 03.02.2020

Connect with Mithun’s museum design team at the 2020 Building Museums conference in Chicago, Illinois on March 4-6th. Building Museums is a national symposium on the process, promise and pitfalls of planning and managing museum building projects, and is presented by the Mid-Atlantic Association of Museums (MAAM) in partnership with the Association of Midwest Museums.

The conference agenda features sessions about the design of Louisiana Children’s Museum and National Nordic Museum, both recent winners of USA Today 10 Best New Museums Awards:

THURSDAY, MARCH 5, 3:00 PM–4:15 PM
Listening to Children—Getting Started on a Visitor Experience Master Plan
Mithun partner Rich Franko will participate in a panel discussion with Louisiana Children’s Museum CEO Julia Bland, Studio Matthews principal Kristine Matthews, and Vergeront Museum Planning founder Jeanne Vergeront. Gyroscope president and founder Maeryta Medrano will moderate.

The newly opened Louisiana Children’s Museum applied an unorthodox approach when developing the museum’s master plan: they used a Reggio Emilia-inspired process to engage very young children in the visitor experience master plan. This session will show how the team used this process to engage very young children at the onset of this multi-year project by listening to children and their ideas. This approach led to a deep investigation into children’s thinking, how they express themselves in drawings and words, and an institutional commitment to continue to keep children at the center of planning, design and future programming. FRIDAY, MARCH 6, 11:30 AM–12:45 PM
2020 Buildy Award Recipients—The National Nordic Museum and the Bell Museum
Join members of the Mithun design team and National Nordic Museum Executive Director Eric Nelson at this luncheon awards ceremony to celebrate the winning museums’ leadership and exemplary accomplishment through the planning, construction, and life after opening. The award recognizes the museums as an institution, their director and staff, and the building/design construction teams whose completed museum construction projects demonstrate high achievement in the lessons of the Building Museums™ Symposium: careful, creative planning and diligent implementation, leading to institutional sustainability.
