Mithun has received an American Institute of Architects (AIA) Education Facility Design Awards – Award of Excellence for Blakely Elementary School in Bainbridge Island, Washington.

The national Education Facility Design Awards program is presented by AIA national and its Committee on Architecture for Education. Blakely Elementary School is among 12 projects across the nation that have been recognized as innovative examples of contemporary educational architecture that enhance modern pedagogy.

Blakely Elementary incorporates diverse indoor and outdoor learning spaces for students in preschool through fourth grade. Views from classrooms and the library toward the learning courtyard and forest beyond reinforce connection to nature throughout the learning experience and celebrate the rural Bainbridge setting.

“This project demonstrates strong skills in responding to the unique site that transverses to the forest ridge. The different levels and materials create wonderful spatial experiences for small children,” commented the Education Facility Design Awards jury. “The school creates a procession from entry to the library, an engaging experience for learners. It’s like a playground.”
