Highlights from the AIA Conference on Architecture

It was fantastic to celebrate with friends, colleagues and collaborators at the AIA Conference on Architecture in San Francisco this month! Highlights included:
- Honoring Dr. Sharon Egretta Sutton FAIA, recipient of the 2023 AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Architectural Education. A longtime friend of Mithun, she is an educator, author and architect with decades of pathbreaking achievements and formative influence on design graduates past and present. Her focus on empowering students and centering topics of ethics and responsibility in the design professions has made a powerful impact for generations of architects and allied professions.
- Sharing our latest research, design thinking and sustainable strategies with peers in no less than seven educational sessions! Topics spanned equity and inclusion via community engagement, design for extreme heat, buildings as environmental education tools, advancements in sustainable design and our own mission-driven approach to design practice.
- Co-hosting the University of Washington College of Built Environments alumni gathering, including an update on College initiatives by dean Renee Cheng FAIA.
- Touring attendees through San Francisco neighborhoods from Mission Bay to the Mission District and beyond. We had a great time facilitating tours by foot and by bike of exemplary affordable housing projects including Mithun’s 626 Mission Bay Boulevard, Casa Adelante 2060 Folsom and Casa Adelante 681 Florida, as well as hosting an open studio night in our new workplace at 585 Howard.
- Toasting our own Bill LaPatra FAIA, newly elevated to the College of Fellows. Bill has been instrumental in helping grow the firm’s higher education and student life practice to national prominence. He is a leader in the design of sustainable campus communities and vibrant urban mixed-use and workplace projects.
- And, of course, getting on stage in front of thousands of friends and colleagues to officially receive the 2023 AIA Architecture Firm Award!
