Tacoma’s Waterfront Renaissance
Thea's Landing
Tacoma, WA
Catalyst for Development
This project commenced with great urban design goals, a shared vision for the Thea Foss Waterway (a designated EPA Superfund site), and the belief that good design could create a market and build a vibrant urban community. The first residential development in a formerly derelict waterfront industrial area, Thea’s Landing served as the key catalyst for further development of Tacoma’s emerging cultural and museum district.
Growing from a Shared Vision
The concept emerged from a national competition and served as a focus of a productive public/private partnership between the City, the Foss Waterway Development Authority and the design/development team. The full-block mixed-use development – including urban lofts, ground-oriented units and stacked flats over commercial space – heralded the beginning of a planned urban renaissance along the Waterway, reconnecting downtown Tacoma with the harbor.
