Some preservation projects require nimble approaches as new discoveries are made. Should materials be fully replaced? Or should they remain and be conserved? What role do craftspeople play in the project? And how can the challenges of the materials—whether wood, plaster, terra cotta, or glass—inform the treatment approach? Three Preservation Design Award entries will be highlighted in this session, each of which illustrates varied conservation approaches to unique and irreplaceable aspects of an historic building rehabilitation.

Join Mithun partners Craig Hodgetts and Ming Fung for “Conservation Approaches to Historic Buildings,” to learn about the transformation of historic Robert Frost Auditorium into a state-of-the-art performance facility with slides and illustrations indicating the design process along with historic photographs of the construction of the original building by Julius Schulman. As the existing building was and still is an example of thin-shell concrete construction, with a span of more than two hundred feet and a thickness of only four inches, there were many technical and structural issues involved requiring “out-of-the-box” concepts.
