On Wednesday, Mayor Ed Lee and District Three Supervisor Julie Christensen visited Sansome and Broadway Family Housing. Mayor Lee ceremoniously gave resident Lidia Flores her keys to her new home, even though she had moved in two weeks ago. Flores, a single mother of two, told writer J.K. Dineen that she is “relieved” to be living in her new apartment. Having just moved from a residential hotel in the Outer Mission, Flores is not used to having her own private kitchen and bathroom in her apartment.
Owned and managed by Chinatown CDC, Sansome and Broadway consists of 75 units for low-income families, many of whom were living in residential hotels and other types of single-room-occupancy housing. The building stands on the former site of an off-ramp for the Embarcadero Freeway, disassembled after damage in the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake.
About 75 percent of the families have moved in to the building. A grand opening celebration is planned for June.
