The AIA Seattle Committee of the Environment (COTE) is hosting a Design for Equity Sustainability Slam as part of this year’s Seattle Design Festival. Speakers will share brief presentations to describe recent work, inspire new perspectives and encourage conversation. The theme of equity adds an interesting dimension to our thinking about sustainability.
Mithun’s Kristen Belt will be discussing innovative approaches to affordable housing in San Francisco, where the creation of affordable housing is seen as an opportunity not only to provide homes for extremely low to moderate income residents in an increasingly tight market, but also to set the city’s standards for urbanism, design quality, and sustainability. Zoning maps place parcels for affordable housing in prominent, gateway locations, sending the message that the city is committed to addressing the housing needs for its lowest income residents, and that these residents are an essential part of the function, diversity and beauty of the city. The recently completed mixed use building at 1180 Fourth Street in San Francisco’s Mission Bay neighborhood will be a featured case study.
