Join Mithun partner Anne Torney for “Complete Communities: Building Support & Creating Thriving Commercial Spaces” a case study presentation that will demonstrate how public-private partnerships, transit agency collaborations and community engagement can maximize the benefits of TOD to create whole communities. Place-based solutions and multi-sector collaboration are needed now more than ever to increase access to transit and maximize public benefit.

Anne will discuss design and outreach at Kapuso at the Upper Yard, 130 units of affordable family housing over community-serving commercial and a new public open space at a busy BART station in one of the most diverse neighborhoods of San Francisco. A multi-lingual community co-design process elevated the voices of underrepresented groups amongst multiple public agencies and catalyzed widespread support for a new pedestrian-friendly transit plaza and adding three more stories and 50% more units to the initial design brief, leveraging public investment and opportunities for equitable, car-free living. The result transformed this former windswept parking lot into community infrastructure for transit, social equity, community identity and decarbonization.

Anne’s co-presenters include Stantec transit planner and project manager Austin Gibble, Stantec vice president, urban places fellow David Dixon and Leland Consulting Group managing principal Chris Zahas.
